Not Dead – A Zine
An exhibition by Jeanie Jean
About the Artist
Based in the Kent suburbs, Jeanie Jean’s work draws on punk, 80’s revival, pin up and skinhead fashion culture which she captures in a raw documentary style. Her work has been featured in the British Culture Archive (BCA21), The Photo Book Cafe in Old Street and most recently Underground England.
About the Exhibition
‘Yes subculture is not what it used to be, and a lot of that has to do with the media landscape. It’s not as televised, or in the papers – you just need to know where to look! You need to explore the subcultural nooks and crannies. It’s like when people say there’s no good music anymore. And that perception is because the charts don’t exist anymore. You need to make a bit more of an effort to know what’s going on and what’s well. Deep dive the internet for interesting new music, see what gigs are going in in pubs and smaller venues, look for club nights.’
For the past 7 years, I thought punk, goth, skinhead and underground subculture had completely fizzled out. It was as the pandemic came to an end that I decided to put my curiosity to the test. As I journeyed around the country with my polaroid and DSLR capturing the most wonderful people: from the concrete jungles of Salford, to silent hilly moors of Leeds, to the busy crowded high streets of New Cross Gate, before my eyes I could see this creative fury arising from the cracks of Johnson and Truss’s Britain.
I realised we are not dead. We are here. And we’re ready to start a riot.
