Organised by Shy.Away, ‘Facing Reality’ Exhibition delves into the darker side of a society of appearances.
Combining imagery with physical confrontation, Facing Reality drifts through displays of warped minds and bodies, projecting twisted perceptions of the self, questioning the preformative natures of the individual, and exploring the ways in which we hold others and ourselves to superficial social standards. The London-based duo consists of Polish and Lithuanian artists Gosha Kwiecien and Gabija Ellen Zemaityte.
Gabija demonstrates change of behaviour through a series of portraits that take subjects off-guard, capturing the difference when someone notices the camera lens on them.
Gosha crafts synthetic materials into elongated limbs and exaggerated dimensions of the body to offer an upfront look at this controlling disorder.
“The concept for this show came from my own experience. I wanted to expose the inner state of body dysmorphia and lower the stigma surrounding the mental health condition, because internal and external perceptions don’t always line up.” – Gosha
