BYOP – Writing Workshops

THEME – Metaphysical Poetry: from John Donne to Frank O’Hara

What is poetry? Why is poetry? And why does it all sound so weird and funny? Am I not clever enough to get it? Is it deliberately obtuse? Perhaps! Or perhaps not. With this workshop brought to you by Bring Your Own Poetry, we will explore a different form of poetry each month. We will ask these questions and more with a close reading of the chosen poem. Attendees will then have the opportunity to write their own sonnet, villanelle, haiku, ode or elegy, and more, inspired by the chosen poem. We will also read poems attendees have brought with them and they will get feedback from the group. If you’re getting stuck with your sonnets, or feel hounded by your haikus, this workshop may be for you. A great chance to learn the forms, do it for yourself, and meet like minded poetry lovers.

What to Expect:

Exploration of a different poetry form and theme each month

Close reading and discussion

Guided writing sessions

A chance to receive feedback on your own poetry

And of course, great food and drink from the cafe

Bring Your Own Poetry has been bringing poetry to the community for several years now. Started in the front room of its founder David Lynch (not that one!), it has found a warm and welcome home at Artfix. The last Friday of every month is dedicated to an open-mic night where poets can bring their own poetry to read. Everyone is welcome, and everyone is a poet. We believe in giving everyone a voice and that everyone has a poem in them.
